How to Begin Making Money from Your Investments


After I made an quick comment on my personal blog explaining how Aaron and I were able to earn between $80,000 and $100,000 a year without having full time jobs during our undergraduate days at college years ago, I received a flood of private messages, emails, and comments that included a ton of questions about making money.  I decided to write a guide explaining the basics of making money in each major type of investment - stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and real estate.  In all of them, making money really comes down to one formula: Revenue minus cost equal profits.  To learn more, let's get started!

Have you ever wondered how to get rich?  To begin, there are four important keys that underpin my philosophy to making money and becoming financially independent.  I wrote them out for you here in the hopes that you find them useful in your own quest for success.  Take a moment to read over them, print them out, and think about them.

6. Making Money from Mutual Funds

A vast majority of Americans have invested in mutual funds, mostly through a 401(k) plan at work, a Roth IRA, a Traditional IRA, a 403(b), a SEP-IRA, a Simple IRA, or another retirement account. Unfortunately, many new investors can't actually tell you what a mutual fund is, how a mutual fund works, or how you make money from a mutual fund. This brief introduction to making money from mutual funds was designed to help you answer those questions.

7. Making Money from ETFs

Making money from ETFs is almost the same process as making money from mutual funds.  The source of your profit will depend upon the type of investment owned by the ETF.  This provides some guidelines for typical ways most ETFs might make money.
